Monaghan YOUTHREACH
– Programme/Centre Activities and Developments
Monaghan YOUTHREACH (at Knockaconny) offers a wide-ranging and comprehensive programme of FETAC certified subjects. This programme, delivered in conjunction with selected project work and a carefully monitored work experience programme, gives participants the opportunity to develop and fulfil their potential. All YOUTHREACH Trainees follow a programme which is designed to fit their individual needs, education requirements and aspirations, regardless of level and ability. The main objective is that participants are provided with the necessary qualifications and personal development to enable them to enter the workplace or continue into further education. For example, four YOUTHREACH Trainees who left the programme in 2005 are successfully continuing further studies at MIFET (Monaghan Institute of Further Education and Training).
Under the 1998 Education Act YOUTHREACH Centres are now designated Centres of Education. With this designation come responsibilities and an increasing professionalism in the delivery of service. To this end, Monaghan YOUTHREACH has begun to engage with the Quality Framework Initiative with is being rolled out nationally. Moreover, the Department of Education has established an Inspectorate for YOUTHREACH which will visit all Centres to conduct an evaluation and report on good practice and promote quality standards. A report will be sent to each individual Centre following the evaluation and a composite report on the overall operation of Centres will be compiled from the individual reports. The individual reports will be published in accordance with Publicaiton of School Inspection Reports – Guidelines www.education.ie.
These are welcome developments for the future development of this most valuable programme for early school-leavers.
