CO MONAGHAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC
The County Monaghan School of Music was established in 2004. This initiative is intended to address a local need – for expert, co-ordinated, accessible teaching and learning of music, at all levels, throughout the county. (Dance may be added at a later date). The objective is to develop a Centre of Excellence for the Teaching of Music (instrumental, vocal/choral, and individual/group) in Co Monaghan, mainly for young people, but also for adults. A County Music Organiser (part-time) is employed by Co Monaghan VEC, based at the MIFET/Garage Theatre campus. Over 350 children are receiving expert tuition in a range of instruments at four outreach centres and VEC school locations. The County Music Organiser is also responsible for music Summer Camps and an Annual Musical production/recital.
Music Classes
Classes in twelve different instruments are offered at three centres (Beech Hill College, Monaghan,
Ballybay Community College and Inver College, Carrickmacross) and approximately 350 young people/adults attend
these. Music classes for young people are organised on a term basis, similar to night classes. The classes run
between 4.30 and 7.30pm, four evenings per week. Traditional instruments include Accordion, Tin Whistle and
Fiddle. Other instruments include Piano, Keyboard, Violin, Guitar and Brass or Woodwind instruments.
New terms begin in January, April and September each year.
