DRAMA

DRAMA SUMMER PROJECT

2009 marks the fourth summer of drama workshops held at the Garage Theatre, in association with Monaghan School of Performing Arts, led by Krista Hamilton. Workshops are held for 9-12 year olds and 13 – 16 year olds. Each workshop will last for one week and entail training in a range of theatre skills, concluding with an end-of-week performance for family and friends. The camps have been very successful with over 120 children attending the workshops to date and many participants returning each summer.

*The dates for this summer are as follows:

9 – 12 yr olds August 10th – 14th

13 – 16 yr olds August 17th – 21st

MONAGHAN YOUTH THEATRE

Monaghan Youth Theatre, in association with Monaghan Academy of Performing Arts and the Garage Theatre, embarks on its third year this September. The company, led by Krista Hamilton, aims to create a core performance ensemble that explores all aspects of the theatrical experience. The focus is to provide opportunities for creative and personal development through drama and performance techniques.

When the project began in March 2007, auditions were held and 27 participants were invited to join the ensemble. That company put on a total of two shows. The first in June ’07 was a showcase event consisting of monologues and scenes. Their second production was the classic American full-length play, Our Town, which was performed in December ’07. There was a slight break in activity due to Ms. Hamilton’s maternity leave but the group has been highly active since her return in July ’08 and recently staged their third production in April ’09 with an exceptional production of Totally Over You.
Some of the objectives of the group include: offering an education in a wide range of theatre forms both text-based and physical, including contemporary and classical techniques; experience of a cross section of international texts including Irish, European and works from world theatre; access to different aspects of theatre including lighting, sound, set design and stage management; the opportunity to work with a number of different tutors and professional companies (both national and international) who can bring particular skills and training to the group; developing the personal and social skills of young people, enhancing their confidence and self esteem; and building positive and constructive links between education/schools and theatre/arts.

*Monaghan Youth Theatre has currently opened its doors to anyone with a keen interest in drama and does not operate by an “invitation only” policy. The company will commence again in September ’09, when participants will be charged a fixed rate to attend monthly workshops.
