Introduction

General information on Youthreach   

Youthreach is an integral part of the national programme of second- chance education and training in Ireland and is a central part of the governments contribution to the achievement of a life long learning society.
The programme is directed at unemployed young early school leavers aged between 15 and 20. It offers participants the opportunity to identify and pursue viable options within adult life and provides them with opportunities to acquire certification. It operates on a full-time, year round basis.
Youthreach is funded by the Exchequer under the National Development plan. It is a joint programme between two government departments – Education and Science and Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
At present there are over ninety Youthreach centres distributed throughout Ireland. While Youthreach is a national programme, centres are locally managed by VECs and programmes reflect the particular social, economic and cultural environment in which they operate. This local management is the pillar of the programmes design and operation.

Youthreach and Co. Monaghan VEC

Co. Monaghan VEC have been involved in the education and training of early school leavers since 1987 when the Youth Skills courses, of 6 months duration, were contracted to the VEC by FAS. Youth Skills was then replaced by the Youthreach Programme in 1991.
At present Youthreach training centres currently operate in Monaghan and Castleblayney.

Aims & Objectives of Youthreach in Co. Monaghan:

1. To promote personal and social development and increased self-esteem
2. To provide second-chance education and high quality training
3. To focus on the development of the occupational capacities, interests and attitudes of individuals so that they can compete effectively in an ever changing labour market.
4. To promote social participation and integration
5. To instil in our young people a sense of discipline, motivation, respect for others and good attitudes.
