School Transport Scheme
The School Transport Scheme was established in 1967 and is administered by Bus Eireann as agent for the Department of Education & Science.
Mr Martin G. O'Brien (CEO, Co Monaghan VEC) is the Transport Liaison Officer (appointed by the Department) for Co Monaghan and is responsible for the co-ordination of school transport for primary and post primary schools.
Meetings are arranged annually with Bus Eireann representatives and school Principals to discuss school calendar and any school transport requirements/problems they may have. In addition, parents can make representations direct to the Transport Liaison Officer. To be eligible under the post primary school transport scheme a pupil must:
- Be enrolled for an approved course in a recognised post primary school.
- Be not less then 12 years of age on or before 1st January of the school year in which the pupil enters second level education.
- Have completed sixth class in a national school or its equivalent.
- Live 3 miles or more from his/her appropriate post primary education centre.
