The Historical Background to the Name:
The town of Carrickmacross grew up around an old church - the "Cell Rois in provincial Monghodorum" located near Tober-Inver. Tober-Inver was located a hundred yards from the present telephone box at the bottom of the Church Hill. The large house in Magheross, belonging to the Carragher family, was and is called Inver Lodge. In 1634, Essex employed one Thomas Raven to survey the whole estate and his report tells us something about the infant town of Carrickmacross. Apart from the castle, there was an inn belonging to William Cesar and this was the only house with a slated roof, windows and chimneys. Beside it stood about a dozen hovels with neither windows nor chimneys and roofed with straw. This was the town proper. Some distance away stood what was called the Irish village of Magheross and this consisted of more than a dozen similar hovels where the Irish were content to live. Apart from the ancient church of Magheross, this was Carrickmacross in 1634. The Well, therefore, would have been a meeting place for natives and settlers alike - a unifying force in an embryonic town.

-
the four outside parts of a Celtic cross symbolise the link with the past;
- the Fleur de Lis: emblems on the Toll House symbolising Carrickmacross as a Centre of Commerce and Industry.
The Mesh is from a Carrickmacross Lace design.
